Let’s be honest: too many of our brilliant AI pilots in New Zealand are not scaling!

We're all buzzing with AI enthusiasm, running pilots, and seeing glimpses of what's possible. That's fantastic!
But here's the uncomfortable truth… many of these promising initiatives are getting stuck. They're languishing in the pilot phase, never quite making the leap to true, transformative scale. We're investing time, energy, and resources, only to see these projects stall. It's frustrating, and frankly, it's holding us back.
This isn't just an NZ problem, of course. Globally, reports from Gartner and McKinsey consistently show a massive percentage of AI projects failing to move past proof of concept. Businesses worldwide grapple with data quality, integration headaches, talent shortages, and misalignment between tech experiments and overarching business strategy.
Without exec commitment to operationalising AI even the most innovative pilots often become expensive experiments. Here in New Zealand, and across the Tasman, these global challenges are often amplified.
I've seen it firsthand. We often fall victim to the ‘shiny object’, getting excited by the tools and the demos but forgetting to rigorously define the long term business problem it solves at scale.
Then there are the Leadership Gaps. We need leaders who understand not just what AI can do, but how to weave it into our organisational processes, championing change and allocating significant resources beyond the initial pilot.
Us kiwi’s can also be a bit too comfortable with incremental improvements rather than disruptive transformation, showing a clear risk aversion.
Finally - getting a pilot to work in a contained environment is one thing. Seamlessly integrating it into complex legacy systems and processes across multiple divisions? That's where many initiatives simply run out of steam.
We've got to stop treating AI as a series of disconnected PoC’s. The time for tinkering is over. This is about strategic imperative – the future of the organisation you lead, not just interesting tech demos. To truly unlock the power of AI in our organisations, we need a fundamental shift in mindset and approach.
Some ideas to move forward:
- Stop Dreaming Small; Plan for Scale from Day One: Every AI initiative needs a clear vision for organisation wide adoption. What's the real business problem? What does success look like at 10x, 100x the pilot scale? Map out the journey before you start tinkering.
- Make Data a Strategic Asset, Not an Afterthought: This is non negotiable. Invest heavily in data governance, quality, integration, and accessibility. AI is only as good as the data it learns from. Treat your data infrastructure with the same gravity as your core financial systems.
- Lead with Purpose, Not Just Interest: This isn't a project for IT alone (more on that to come). Your active, informed, and sustained leadership is critical. Champion the vision, break down silos, allocate investment, and drive the cultural shift required to embrace AI at every level. This includes investing in upskilling your teams.
- Rethink ROI Beyond the Pilot: The metrics for a pilot differ from a scaled solution. Focus on tangible business outcomes: efficiency gains, new revenue streams, enhanced customer experiences. Measure genuine, scalable value, not just technical feasibility.
- Build Cross Functional Agile Teams with a Product Mindset: AI initiatives aren't just technical builds… they're product development. Bring together your strategic thinkers, domain experts, developers, and change management people from the outset. Foster a culture of continuous iteration and value creation.
The opportunity for kiwi businesses to lead with AI is immense. We have the ingenuity, the drive, and often the willingness to innovate. But we need to move beyond isolated successes and embrace a bold, connected strategy for scaling AI.
